Walks discovering new places in Brent and London with a friendly group of 6-10 walkers. Two shorter walks linking with Brent u3a lunches and teas and one or two longer walks each month, usually 4-7 miles. With refreshment stops and usually Freedom Pass assessible.

Walking group holiday in Inverness - July 2026

A small group of keen walkers had a short break in Inverness at the start of July – lots of cool sunshine. We stayed in a pretty bed and breakfast which belongs to and is run by Jo and Kieron. Jo is daughter of Donald and Odette, long-standing members of Brent u3a. Jo looked after us very well and gave us lots of helpful advice. Kieron cooked us wonderful breakfasts.

Inverness is gateway to the Highlands and we had three days of lovely walks and trips. We visited Inverness Castle and had lovely walks along the River Ness, visiting the Ness Islands, where we met the Loch Ness Monster, wearing her best tam o’ shanter. We took the train to nearby Elgin and visited the medieval cathedral, destroyed by the Wolf of Badenoch. We also visited the Bible Garden next door to the ruined cathedral, which had each of the 114 plants mentioned in the Bible, as well as lots of other pretty plants and flowers. And we visited Inverness’ terrific botanic gardens, which not only had lovely flowers but also a great café. Which outing did people like best? The vote went for the Bible Garden and the botanic gardens in Inverness.

We travelled up to Inverness and back by train, a long but lovely journey, from one end of England and Scotland to the other. On the way we got good views of the great cities of York, Durham, Newcastle and Edinburgh and the last part of the journey was through the Scottish Highlands, with a striking view over Loch Ness as we arrived in Inverness.

And yes, we tried the local beer and whisky. All in all, we had a bonny wee Scottish break!
